Ezoic Ads: Catapult your AdSense Revenue & Optimise Visitor Experience

Sharing is caring!

Often many of my friends ask me – ‘do you earn something from your travel blog or is it just a hobby?’. And when I reply in the affirmative, some of them are surprised and others are curious as to ‘how does the blog make money’. So, I thought, it’s better to write a post on the topic of monetization through ads (in general) and Ezoic ads network (in particular).

When I started Places in Pixel, the primary idea was to share my travel stories with the world, especially through the camera. At that point in time, this was merely a hobby. But with time, I started liking the experience and began digging more into the idea of developing it into a proper travel blog.

Within a few months of blogging (while having a full-time job), I started gaining some traction. And it’s then that I slowly began thinking of monetizing the blog. I used to read a lot of other blogs about monetization techniques, passive income etc. In the paragraph below, I have tried to summarize some of the learning.

Ways to monetize your blog

Once you start getting substantial and healthy traffic to your blog, here are plenty of ways to earn a regular income from it. Some of them are:

  • Advertisements (or ads) – have you ever thought – how does Facebook or Google earn? The answer is simple – Advertisements! By placing ads on your website/blog, you can start generating income from your traffic. But in order to get decent earnings, you need sufficient blog traffic! Also, there are a lot of aspects to consider here, some of which I have covered below.
  • Brand Collabs / Sponsored content – Another way to make some money is by collaborating with brands and in the form of reviewing their products or services.
  • Affiliate marketing – this is probably the most popular method that bloggers use to generate revenue from their blogs (including us!). You don’t need to have your own products or services to sell – you can sell others’ products and services and make some commission out of every sale!
  • Selling courses / services – Selling digital online courses is another way you can profit from blogging. By putting your heart & soul into these courses, you can simply allow them to sell on autopilot for you, another excellent avenue for passive income.
  • Selling ebooks / products – Creating digital or physical products is a great way to profit from your blog. But I guess it takes a lot of effort and time to create such products.

In this post, I will focus more on the 1st point – ads!

Ads networks that I considered

Now, coming to the topic of generating income through ads – there are many ads networks out there, and also they are of different types. Some will pay you only when a visitor clicks on the ad (PPC – pay per click), some others will pay you only when a visitor clicks on the ad and completes an action like subscribing etc (PPA – pay per action) and others will pay you simply when a visitor sees the ad (PPI – pay per impression). Obviously, the money you make will be different. In general – PPA > PPC > PPI – for obvious reasons!

Most of the ads networks out there are the PPI type, but the revenue that you generate varies a lot. Some of them are Google AdSense (the most common and most widely used), Ezoic, Mediavine, Media.net, Propeller Ads among others.

The above mentioned 5 ads networks were the ones I was considering to use. While AdSense and Propeller Ads don’t have any minimum traffic requirements, the others (Ezoic, Mediavine, Media.net) do.

I had even made a small comparative table by gathering as much information possible from different bloggers’ groups on Facebook –

Getting started with Ezoic ads

While I was still in the middle of deciding which ads networks to apply for, I received a surprise-email (in October’19) from Ezoic asking me if I would like to join them! And trust me, I was super happy!

Although, as a blog-timeline, I had thought of applying for ads after a few more months (and more traffic), I didn’t want to let go of this opportunity. So, I thought to myself – ‘even if there are some adverse effects of using ads on my blog, I can always revert back’.

After a few email exchanges, we setup a time for a tele-con. Matt Lawson, now my account manager, gave me all the details over the phone, and since then has patiently answered all my queries. The kind of support that Matt has provided is worth appreciating.

What is Ezoic ?

Ezoic is an automated website testing company that enables publishers to evaluate and optimize ad placements and website layouts. Utilizing AdSense and DoubleClick Ad Exchange, Ezoic helps publishers maximize revenue and improve user experience across desktop, mobile and tablet.

My experience with Ezoic ads

Although it has been only 2 months (when writing this post in Dec’19) since I started using Ezoic ads on my blog, it has been a great experience. There are many tools that Ezoic offers and I prolifically use some of them, but according to me the best thing about Ezoic is their support!

Here are the 3 things about Ezoic that I love the most –

Support: Absolutely awesome. Right from the first tele-con till today, the support that Matt has provided is immaculate. I mean, the way he patiently guided me during the setup process answering 1000s of my queries, is worth highlighting. And then clarifying all my doubts regarding visitor experience optimization.

Tools: Although Ezoic offers plenty of tools through their user-friendly dashboard, my personal favourite are Ad Tester, Site Speed analysis and Big Data Analytics. I use them regularly, especially Big Data Analytics to gain deeper insights about which blog posts generating better EPMV (earnings per 1000 visits) and which category (demography) of the audience is having a higher impact on my earnings.

Transparency: Right from the first call, I was clearly informed that Ezoic will not charge me any money for using their services, nor will they levy any contracts.

Earnings & Optimizations with Ezoic

So, after setting up Ezoic and activating ads on our blog, the initial 8-10 days was the optimization period. During this time, the AI software was testing various combinations, sizes and positions of the ads that will generate maximum revenue.

Then once the initial optimizations were complete, then the EPMV became more-or-less stable.

In addition to increased revenue, I have also gained from Ezoic by using their Cloudafare integration (CDN) and as well as Ezoic’s caching. Both of these have helped me improve my site’s loading speed.

In the end…

In this short span of 2 months, I have really started liking Ezoic. And, based on the above-mentioned experience, I would genuinely recommend anyone who uses AdSense to try Ezoic. Also, even if you haven’t yet started using AdSense, you can still apply for Ezoic and during the set-up process, you can apply for AdSense.

Additionally, feel free to contact us if you need any help with Ezoic or if you have any queries whatsoever!
